Delighted to announce that this month's winner is Martin Weigel, whose excellent post/deck on brands, humility and indifference very narrowly beat James Caig's tale of the bottom half of culture. Well done to Martin, who is on something of a roll having won last month's vote as well. Thanks everyone for taking part.

Well done Martin - a deserved winner.

Thank you sir, that's very kind. Though Helen Edward's piece about advice from dead people - in which she observed that many online commentators are the the equivalent of the pub bore - has given me genuine pause for thought. I think I'm going to take a break for a bit!

Hi Martin. Thanks for stopping by and for the comment. I take Helen's point, and it's a great post. I like to think that pubs are full of all kinds, including people with fascinating opinions, so I hope you're not away for too long :-)

To be fair - Helen is a first class intellect and a frankly startling mass of hugely useful advice and opinion backed by fact. Her point is beautifully made - there are pub bores and then there are the observations that stand out like gems in the dust. I agree with Neil - please don't stay away for too long Martin. In the meantime - mine's a pint...
